Greek is an aggressively satirical look at industrial life, played out in mock imitation of the Oedipal myth, whereby the central character kills his father and marries his mother. In the working class figure of Eddy, Berkoff has personified both the symptom and the cause of contemporary ills - Eddy's rise epitomises society's fall.
England's enfant terrible, Mark-Anthony Turnage, has taken these ingredients and amplified them in a gritty and powerful score, awarded Best New Score and Best New Libretto at the 1988 Munich Biennale.
