WILLOH S. WEILAND
APPOINTED NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF APHIDS

Young artist & galactic enterpriser, Willoh S. Weiland, has been appointed to lead the Melbourne-based artist-led organisation, aphids. Willoh succeeds composer David Young’s 16 years of artistically directing the company which is renown for its unexpected and contemporary take on performance and art. David took up the artistic directorship of chamber made opera earlier this year.

Chamber Made Opera congratulates both Willoh and Aphids on this visionary appointment of Willoh S. Weiland to the position of Artistic Director. While Aphids’ 2010 program continues to roll out, Willoh will be developing the 2011 artistic program and beyond. She takes up the position immediately.

Willoh S. Weiland is an artist, writer and curator concerned with new ways for text to inhabit contemporary performance. In early 2008, Willoh was the recipient of an Aphids mentorship for her work Yelling at Stars, an ongoing art science project which was presented at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl as the closing event of the 2008 Next Wave Festival. She has also recently presented at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow and at Less Remote, an art / science symposium running parallel to the 59th International Astronautical Congress.

Willoh has just completed an Asialink residency in Beijing, an artist residency in Iceland and a boat trip from El Salvador to her birthplace in Belize, Central America.

"Aphids is a very unique and unusual organism in the arts arena, and we are damn lucky to be appointing Willoh who is hugely talented and a perfect fit with the Aphids spirit and ethos. Combined with the astonishingly passionate and skilled artistic and logistic team already at Aphids, I really cannot imagine what Aphids will become under her watch - and that's exactly what I am most excited about. Watch out and watch this space!"
said David Young, outgoing Artistic Director and co-founder of Aphids.

Willoh S. Weiland says “I am honoured and thrilled to take up this position and continue to work with the incredible team at Aphids. Watch out for 2011 program, together we are going to paint the town green! With more unique projects where you least expect them.”
